Gallery 1837 is a contemporary, salon style art gallery representing a select group of American, Latin American, and French artists. Founded in 1990 by Vicky Tesmer, the gallery moved to 1837 West Grand Ave in 2002. While many of the artists represented are local Chicago artists not all of them are inhabitants of the midwest. Strong in structure and concept, Gallery 1837 communicates social and contemporary issues through the plastic arts. It is dedicated to the growing pursuit of providing society with creative expression defined by the language of its diverse artists and their work.
Given the uniqueness of the space, Gallery 1837 is a perfect stepping stone venue for artists who are establishing themselves in Chicago.

Upcoming Classes
Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting Classes:
Study the classical approach to fine art with Vicky Tesmer's studio. Students learn line contour, classical drawing and painting, and develop skills in color mixing and spatial relations. Using a mixture of mediums, artists study portraiture, life drawing, still life and studying work of the masters.
Figure painting and drawing is the art of understanding human life - the flesh which covers the soul. There must be an interest in the subject - something the artist wants to say about the subject. It is a primary condition to painting the figure and portrait painting. The work is done when that special conversation has been found. The art teacher helps the artist find this dialog, preparing the artist with the necessary tools to self-express.
